We were commissioned by Anglia Railways and
Railtrack for the refurbishment of Thorpe Railway
Station, a Listed Grade II heritage building.
The project comprised a phased programme of
renovation and enhancement of the existing
buildings and upgrading of accommodation, and
improvements to customer services. This was
achieved through the provision of a modernised
ticket hall, a new information centre and signage,
along with the expansion of customer friendly
activities including the creation of new glazed shop
units, a waiting room and public facilities within the
concourse.
The design incorporates clear glazing and slender
structures that follow the arched profiles of the
historic brickwork enclosing walls allowing their
mass and character to read clearly and provide a
historic backdrop to the contemporary
interventions. The character of the nineteenth
century brick structure is enhanced by the
juxtaposition of 21st century engineering and
materials.
